jgarzik In 2015, if you want to be trusted with #bitcoin, you better be a provably trustless decentralized system, or at least independently audited
@ryanxcharles Ah, drat. I hope you’ll consider joining us at @BitGo
@oditorium If this made Bitcoin unusable then the value would plummet and the miner would have shot themselves in the foot.
@oditorium If a single entity had the majority of computational power and used it to orphan blocks from other miners, sure.
@oditorium You mean mining pools? Even if you have the majority of computational power, miners can’t just make up rules; nodes would reject.
@oditorium I think @NickSzabo4 did a great job explaining with http://t.co/EsAudxvkqA
@oditorium As an engineer I see a certain elegance in having a system run by predictable rules that minimize human corruption / interference
@oditorium I suppose it depends on whether or not you consider appreciation of trustless computing to be inherently political.

5) If you aren’t a crypto anarchist who care about being beholden to rulers, you can store your money with a trusted third party.
4) If you aren’t a cyperhpunk who is concerned about privacy, you can hand your info over to services & let them track your money.
3) The beauty of cryptocurrency is that users don’t have to believe in the ideology in order to benefit from the technology.
2) As a technology, cryptocurrency is ideologically neutral. But it’s important to know its historical ideological roots.
1) As Bitcoin becomes more popular I’m seeing more pushback against the “fringe†libertarian and crypto anarchist ideologies.

@pmccall777 Right now the ‘havoc’ will be -0.41%. Price has declined for a year while hashrate continues to climb. https://t.co/moVrzPoMcQ
@pmccall777 Lots of people claiming that, but miners re-evaluate their profitability every 2016 blocks. Diff algo will adjust accordingly.
@aantonop Bitcoin can’t die merely from majority consensus that it is dead; it requires 100% consensus in order to produce Proof of Death.
@aantonop So I’m not sure that price trends over periods of longer than 2016 blocks are something to be overly worried about WRT hashrate.
@aantonop I suspect that every miner has their own profitability price & they re-evaluate at each difficulty change.
@aantonop Are you comparing a hashrate drop of less than 10% to a reward halving?
2) According to historical @coindesk BPI data, BTC price has “closed” higher 861 days, lower 754 days, no change 25 days since 2010-07-18.

Bitcoin is self regulated; the regulations are developed and followed via consensus of anyone who is interested enough to participate.

@breathingdog There is a certain desire involved. Detractors see it as a near religious / cult-like belief, but I see it as optimism.

There are many who will contribute their resources to furthering the goals of cryptocurrency so long as there is even a glimmer of hope.
Some say Bitcoin won’t fail simply b/c there are too many stakeholders who will prop it up; I kind of agree. But it’s not just about money.
Everyone has their own definition of Bitcoin failing / dying; I define failure as the entire community giving up on trying to improve it.
